26年ぶりに
アメリカに行って来てからしばらくたちましたが、更新が止まりました（笑）。「とまってるよ！」とメールや Facebook でプレッシャーをかけてくれている方々、、、、ありがとう、、、です（苦笑）。

先日、今年の March Madness, 全米大学バスケットボール選手権が終った。3年連続で FINAL 4 に残ってきた母校UCLAも今年はリーグ2位、全米大会〈65校）、2回戦敗退と残念な結果だったが、来年は今年の1年生が主体となる若いチームなので、近い将来12度目の全米優勝を果たしてくれると期待している。
今年の優勝は、アゴスの元受講生も多く留学している、 University of North Carolina。 Michael Jordan の出身校としても有名な名門校で、NCAAは5度目の優勝。Indiana University と並んで3位の記録（2位は University of Kentuckyの7回）。もっともNCAAトーナメントとして発足する前に、UNCは全米優勝が一回あるので、UNCの関係者は「6回目」の優勝だと思っているはずですが。
さて、何と先日、UCLAバスケットボールのマネージャーをしていた時代のヘッドコーチと26年ぶりに繋がった！今の価値観形成に大きく影響を与えてくれた人の一人で、「コーチとして」を超えた人間としての人格者だ。今の時代、技術のおかげでいろいろな人と繋がりなおせる機会がある。 Facebook しかり、ネット検索エンジンしかり。
Coach Larry Farmer を検索してみるとハワイ大学でコーチをしていることが判明。連絡を取ってみたところ翌日返事をもらった。Coach John Wooden の伝説のキャリアの中でも, Coach Farmer は（当時1年生は試合に出られなかった）3年間でなんと89勝1敗、3年とも全米優勝、と言う時代のキャプテンを務め、Bill Walton, Jamaal Wilkes らのその後のNBA（プロリーグ）のオールスター選手と同じチームで活躍した名選手だった。まさに Pyramid of Success の申し子の一人である。
74年の卒業後、私がアシスタントマネージャーになった79年には、 NBAと大学選手権を両方制覇した唯一のコーチとして殿堂入りしている、現 Charｌotte Bobcats のヘッドコーチ、Larry Brown コーチのアシスタントとして、そして81年からはヘッドコーチとして母校で指導にあたった。
そんな彼とのやり取りの抜粋を今日は紹介させてもらいます。
Hello Tadashi,
What a nice surprise! Thanks for thinking of your old coach :) If back in early 80's I did something that helped enrich your life or encourage you to succeed, then it is me who should be thanking you. I hope one day to travel back to Tokyo. I was there briefly, en-route to Beijing, to put on basketball clinics for adidas while at Loyola. Hey there is an idea, you and I can do some basketball camps in Tokyo :)
I've been at Hawaii now for 2 years. I enjoy coaching here, but living here is very expensive. They say it costs to live in paradise, and they're right.
Let's stay in touch, I'm proud of you and look forward to catching up.

Dear Coach Farmer,
It has been almost 26 years since I came back to Tokyo after graduatingfrom UCLA in 83. The experience of being a part of UCLA Basketball and working under your leadership was certainly one of my major highlights of life.
I advise and assist Japanese students and professionals who wish to study overseas and thus get to visit UCLA a couple of time a year.
I believe it was around 2001 or 2002, when I was corrsponding with my long time colleague in the field of international education, who was at Loyola at that time, that I found you were coaching there. I sent you an e-mail but soon after I found that you had left Loyola.
I found your name through University of Hawaii website and although I did not want to bother you too much I couldn't hold off on sending you a message. I am not sure if you are living there or somewhere else during the off season, but I wanted to tell you that the opportunity you gave me to be a part of your team, and all the memories to come with it, means a lot to my career and life.
Although Hawaii is not on my map of usual university visits, I hope to one day see you again.

真ん中の列右から3人目がファーマーヘッドコーチ。右端がUCLAの陸上競技場, Drake Stadium の名前にもなっている トレーナーの Ducky Drake（トレーナーになる前はUCLAおよび全米オリンピックチームの陸上コーチとしてメダリストを多数輩出した名コーチ。遠征先、ホームゲーム前夜はホテルで私のルームメート。彼からもらった言葉は数知れず。。。。それはまたの機会に）、後列真ん中はプロ入り後 Utah Jazz で カール・マローンやジョン・ストックトンと一時代を築いた、今も連絡を取っている2m24cm（！）のセンター Mark Eaton. ここから8人がNBAドラフトでプロ入りした。私？今の面影は、、、〈笑）。
